Our trip to Spain

We left at 7.30 from our school to Helsinki. We stopped at Lahti to eat and then continued to Helsinki airport. After the check-in our flight took off at 14.20 to Amsterdam where our connecting flight left at 17.50 to Spain, Sevilla. Both flights were a little late, so we arrived at 21.00.

We were so excited to see our host families and we almost ran through the airport to see them. They were waiting us with signs. After meeting them we went to eat together. We were a bit nervous, but all the families were so nice and welcoming. Some of us slept well, but some got only few hours of sleep.

3.9.

It’s our first day at school. School starts at 8.00. Today we met the students from Turkey and Romania. We did some presentations of our countries and chose a logo for the project. Then we went to eat. We had baguette and juice. It was really good, but the baguette was really big and even for our teachers it was a bit hard to eat so much. After the snack we went to plant a tree outside. Then we went to see the townhall and few of the many churches of Benacazon. At the townhall the head of Benacazon had a speech for us. At Benacazon the Virgin Mary is the most important icon and all the churches were decorated with pictures and sculptures of Mary. After that we went to our host families and ate lunch. We ate traditional Spanish foods like lentil soup and crokets. In the evening we hung out with our families and later Minttu, Roosa and Lotta went to see a football practice with their hosts. Lene went swimming with her host. We all met after the practise and met new people. Everyone was so nice and we had so much fun.

4.9.

Today we had a lesson at school with our hosts. Some of us had math and some had history. The lessons only lasted an hour and after that we went on a daytrip to Sevilla. At Sevilla we went on a tour with a guide to see monuments and attractions. We had few hours of free time, and we went to eat at a restaurant. One of our 15-year-old hosts ordered beer and we were a little shocked that nobody asked for his ID. The food was really good and surprisingly cheap. After eating we still had some time to spend, so we went shopping. Then we all left and returned to Benacazon. There all of us went to Lene’s hosts Rociós home. We met her mom and later in the evening we went back to Sevilla. On the way we listened to some Finnish music in the car. At Rocio's we had ice cream and churros with chocolate. We did some shopping and visited Las Setas, which is a huge wooden building. The Spanish call it The Mushrooms of Seville. It's one of the world's largest wooden buildings and the view from the top was amazing. After we went home, ate and went to sleep.

5.9.

We woke up at 5.00, because we are going to a national park. It was a bit chilly at that time of the day and since we left before sunrise, we were able to see it rise over the endless fields. We saw many animals and learned about their habitat. After that we went to a huge beach to swim. We played oneXtwo which rules we didn't really understand, but we still had so much fun! We also swam a lot and collected shells. Then we went home with our hosts and ate. Later hung out together and got to meet our host's friends.

6.9.

At 8.00 we had lessons with other students. After we listened presentations about pollution and made posters about earth pollution problems and solutions. We also made soaps and notebooks. After school we all went to eat with our hosts. Later we met and hung out together. In the evening we all went back to the school for goodbye dinner. We met all host families and had really great time together.

7-8.9.

It’s our last day in Spain. We visited Córdova by bus. It took 2 hours to get there. At Córdova we had treasure hunting around the town. After that we went to an old Muslim Mosque. It was huge and impressive. Later we had some free time to walk around the town. Then we went back home and packed our things. Later our families took us to the railway station, and we said our goodbyes. We went to the airport by train and our flight took off at 01.15. We arrived in Finland at 07.00 am. From Helsinki we took a train to Pieksämäki. We were super tired, but so happy!

We had such a great time in Spain. We would definitely like to go back someday. Everything was amazing, but here are some things that we loved the most:

  • Kind and friendly people

  • Amazing weather

  • Beautiful nature

  • The atmosphere at school

  • Delicious food

  • Everything was so cheap (foods, drinks ect.)

  • Small talk

  • We got to meet so many amazing people

  • We made so many long-lasting friendships

  • Learning new things like new cultures

  • Using English

  • We got to see life in Spanish family

We also noticed some cultural differences, for example there were no locks on the bathroom doors, and you had to carry your own toilet paper with you. People were so outgoing and came to hug without hesitation. Fos us as Finns that was a little weird at first, but we really didn’t mind and got used to it.

Overall, this week was one of our best ones yet and we would love to come again!

Roosa, Lotta, Lene and Minttu.
